CollegeAmerica investment

With a variety of American Funds available in CollegeAmerica®, you and your financial adviser can design a college savings program to match your individual needs.

Building your plan

When creating your CollegeAmerica plan, it’s important to work with your financial adviser to choose one or more of the following investment options that fits your needs.

American Funds College Target Date SeriesSM

Our College Target Date Series offers a simple, single selection guided by a beneficiary’s projected college enrollment date. Choose the fund that most closely matches the date you expect to start paying tuition. Each fund’s asset mix automatically grows more preservation-oriented as college approaches. Of course, there are no guarantees your education savings goals will be met, and, as with all investments, periodic evaluations are recommended.

American Funds Portfolio SeriesSM funds

Unlike our Target Date series, each of the funds in the Portfolio Series are designed with a single objective, such as growth or preservation. Your adviser will help you make a choice depending on your time frame and risk tolerance at the time of your investment. Then, as enrollment draws nearer, you can work with your adviser to shift allocations into a preservation portfolio.

The American Funds

From funds focused on short-term bonds to global growth stocks, the individual American Funds available in CollegeAmerica provide a broad range of choices for those who favor a customized portfolio.

With the help of your adviser, you can assemble portfolios matched to your specific risk tolerances and time horizons.

Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value.

Depending on your state of residence, there may be an in-state plan that provides tax and other benefits not available through CollegeAmerica. Before investing in any state’s 529 plan, you should consult your tax adviser.

For funds of funds, investment allocations may not achieve fund objectives. There are expenses associated with the underlying funds in addition to fund-of-funds expenses. The funds' risks are directly related to the risks of the underlying funds as described below.

Investing outside the United States involves risks, such as currency fluctuations, periods of illiquidity and price volatility, as more fully described in the prospectus. These risks may be heightened in connection with investments in developing countries. Small-company stocks entail additional risks, and they can fluctuate in price more than larger company stocks.

The return of principal for bond funds and for funds with significant underlying bond holdings is not guaranteed. Fund shares are subject to the same interest rate, inflation and credit risks associated with the underlying bond holdings. Lower rated bonds are subject to greater fluctuations in value and risk of loss of income and principal than higher rated bonds. Investments in mortgage-related securities involve additional risks, such as prepayment risk, as more fully described in the prospectus.

Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses, summary prospectuses and CollegeAmerica Program Description, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing. CollegeAmerica is distributed by American Funds Distributors® and sold through unaffiliated intermediaries.
