How Capital Group calculates personal rate of return

Capital Group, home of American Funds, uses the Modified Dietz method, an industry-accepted approach. This method computes a personal return based on a time-weighted analysis and does not treat withdrawals as losses or investment amounts as gains. It accounts for:

  • The returns of funds held.
  • Sales charges, fees and expenses.
  • When and how much was added or withdrawn.
  • Any previously owned funds.

Your calculations vs. Capital Group’s calculations

Your calculations may not match the returns we provide due to differences in the calculation method, date range or treatment of closed funds and accounts.

Account-level rate of return is not an average

The account-level rate of return is not an average of the information presented on the statement. It is calculated separately based on all transactions for open, closed and purged funds for the base account.

Accounts opened before 2003

Due to system constraints, returns for accounts started before 2003 are calculated with an initial investment date of January 1, 2003, and the investment value as of that date.

Rate of return vs. fund results

The information provided in the “Fund results from a long-term perspective” section of the quarterly statement represents standard, fund-level returns. These returns are calculated using specific variables and formulas regulated by the SEC that allow investors to compare returns from one investment vehicle to another. The returns do not account for the specific activity that occurred in the accounts shown on the statement.

In addition to being used for fund comparison, it also provides newer investors with information about the long-term performance history of the funds within their portfolio.
