How to Open an American Funds Account

We believe that working with a financial professional is essential to helping you reach your financial goals. Learn how you, together with your financial professional, can invest with us.

Working with a financial professional is key to successful financial planning. That’s why we don’t provide account applications on our website. You’ll need to open an account through your financial professional.

We can, however, help guide you through the process of joining our fund family. If you don’t yet have a financial professional, we’ll be glad to help you find one in your area. Use our Financial Professional Locator.

Set up some time to meet with your financial professional. He or she will help you:

  • identify your investment goals and time frame
  • assess your tolerance for risk
  • analyze your current financial circumstances

Once you’ve set your objectives, your financial professional will help you determine, what type of account(s) you need to open (e.g., IRA, college savings) and recommend which of our funds to invest in.

If you’re eligible to participate in an American Funds retirement plan through your employer, such as a 401(k) or 403(b), ask your financial professional to review your plan features and to help you select your investments.

With your financial professional’s help, complete the appropriate American Funds account application(s) and mail to the address indicated.

Within a few days, you’ll receive a confirmation statement(s) from us in the mail verifying that your account(s) has been activated.

Your confirmation statement(s) will have your account number, which you can use to  set up online account access.

Please note that you may need to take different steps to enroll in your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Your financial professional or human resources representative can provide guidance on what you need to do.

Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value.

Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing.
